4pm burn law expires; prescribed burns in the region

With the expiration of the 4pm burn law, various agencies and groups in the region will be performing prescribed burns and controlled burns of wild lands and cleared land over the next few weeks. Please expect to see or smell smoke in the area, especially where land has been recently cleared.

Do not hesitate to call 911 if you are concerned about a possible fire, heavy smoke, or if you are aware of an uncontrolled or un-monitored situation. Be sure to give as specific a location as possible when reporting distant smoke or fire, clarifying it is not at your address as well as how far it is away, in what direction, and nearby roads if possible.

As a reminder, all burning within the county must be reported to the regional 911 center and must be performed in accordance with law. Burning within the town limits of Blacksburg is restricted by town ordinance and you must obtain a permit to burn within the town.
