Officers

Keith Bolte

  Chief Bolte joined the department in May of 1974. He has held all of the elected officers positions including two terms as Chief. In 1984 he served at Chief for 3 years. He began his second term in 1993 and still holds that position. He is active member of the Southwest Fireman's association, Virginia State Firefighters Association, Virginia Chiefs Association and the International Association of Fire Chiefs. In addition to his duties with the fire department, Chief Bolte is the President and CEO of Annie Kay's Whole Foods, Imaginations Toy and Furniture Company, The Coffee Mill and Bolte Development Property Management.

Bobby Carner
  Assistant Chief Carner began his career in the fire service in March of 1972 when he joined the Longshop-McCoy Volunteer Fire Department. He later joined the Blacksburg Volunteer Fire Department in April of 1977. He served as Lieutenant from 1981 thru 1983, and was Assistant Chief from 1984 thru 1986. Was elected Fire Chief in 1987 and served until 1992, and has been Assistant Chief since then. Asst. Chief Carner is an active member of the Southwest Fire Fighters Association, Virginia Fire Fighters Association, Virginia Fire Chiefs Association, and the International Association of Fire Chiefs. He has been employed at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant Fire Department since 1979, where he has gone through the ranks from firefighter to Assistant Chief. He is the owner and president of New River Fire Extinguishers, Inc.

Mike Linkous   Following in the footsteps of his father, Captain Mike Linkous joined the Blacksburg Fire Department in 1983 and has answered thousands of calls during his tenure with the department.  He has served in a number of officer's positions over the years, including several years as Captain in the 1990's.  Mike is employed by Bolte Development as well as Campus Exxon, and in his spare time he enjoys watching Jimmy Johnson win NASCAR races.

John Cromer
  Lt. Cromer joined the department in February of 1984. He has served in many officer positions with the Blacksburg Fire Department, including Captain. John holds certifications in firefighter I, HazMat awareness and operations, confined space, and trench rescue. Additionally, John is the owner of Quality Carpet Cleaning, a business based right here in Blacksburg. With any free time John focuses on his coaching duties as the head football coach for the Blacksburg Middle School Titans.

James Dustin
  Lt. Dustin joined the department in January of 1997. He moved to Blacksburg in 1995 to attend Virginia Tech. Before moving to Blacksburg he served as a member of two other fire departments in Virginia: Tappahannock-Essex and Sparta. James holds certifications that include vehicle extrication, confined space rescue, hazmat operations, rope rescue, and EMT-B. When not on duty, James works for Virginia Tech - managing multimedia computer labs and classrooms in Torgersen Hall and teaching faculty how to better use technology in their classes.

Norman Croy
  Lt. Croy originally joined the department in 1979. A Blacksburg native, Norman has held many ranks within the department from second lieutenant (107) up to first lieutenant (104). He holds certifications in hazmat operations, firefighter III, and fire investigator II, and is a member of both IAAI and NASO. When not volunteering, he works for the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office as a Lieutenant in the Criminal Investigations Division, where he has worked for 28 years. He is married to Wendy Croy, and has five sons: Charlie, Camden, Caden, Carter, and Cordell. Norman was the 2007 recipient of the BVFD Firefighter of the Year Award.

Andrew Marinik
  Lt. Marinik joined the department in May of 2006. Prior to joining the department, he graduated from Lake Superior State University (Michigan) with a B.S. in Fire Science and a B.S. in Chemistry. Andrew holds certifications that include firefighter I & II, EMT-B, vehicle extrication, confined space rescue, rope rescue, hazmat operations, officer development, LG gas emergencies, emergency vehicle operations, and portable pumps. When not on duty, Andrew works for the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute conducting research on hazardous materials transportation and emergency vehicle safety.

Wayne Garst
  Wayne became a volunteer member of the Blacksburg Fire Department in December of 1984 and was voted Member of the Year in 1990. In 1995 he was hired as the Fire Prevention Coordinator. In 1999 Wayne was appointed Fire Code Official for the Town of Blacksburg, and in March 2007 became the first career firefighter in the Blacksburg Fire Department. His certifications include Fire Officer 1, Instructor III, Juvenile Fire-setter Intervention specialist, Public Fire Safety Educator Level II, Hazardous Materials Level II, Hazwhopper, Fire Fighter III, Heavy & Tactical Rescue-Confined Space Rescue, Fire Attack II, EVOC, Inspector 1031, and Fire Investigator II. Wayne is currently an active life member of the fire department. He has two daughters, Emily and Katie. When not working with the fire department Wayne is an auctioneer, being the principal auctioneer in over 50 auctions per year. He is a Graduate of the Mendenhall School of Auctioneering and the Certified Auctioneers Institute at Indiana University. Wayne has served on the Board of Directors and is a life member of the Virginia Auctioneers Association and a member of the National Auctioneers Association. He was awarded The Jake Horney Memorial Award from the VAA in 2010.

Fire Code Official (109)

  Curtis has been in the fire service for 24 years, serving 8 years with Radford Fire and Rescue before marrying and moving to Dublin, where he has served for the past 16 years. Prior to working for Blacksburg, he worked for five years for the City of Radford Fire and Rescue as a Lieutenant. His certifications include Firefighter, Fire Officer I, Fire Instructor, HazMat Technician, Vehicle Extrication, EVOC, Rope Rescue II, Confined Space, Trench Rescue, Driver Operator Pumper and Aerial, and FEMA Emergency Management Institute Professional Development Series. Curtis is a Past President and Life Member of the Southwest Virginia Firefighters Association, and is the current Secretary. He is married with two children, and enjoys biking, golf, and photography.
